Goals

In-Person Learning Sessions Objectives

Build background knowledge of best practices in disciplinary literacy, including the latest science of reading research Identify and unpack the literacy skills embedded in content area standards (e.g.: Science and Engineering Practices / Cross-Cutting Concepts, Social Studies Inquiry Strand, Standards of Mathematical Practice). Design authentic opportunities for students to read and write as practitioners of your specific discipline. Develop a repertoire of strategies to make authentic reading, writing, and vocabulary-building opportunities accessible to ALL students.

In-district Coaching Support Objectives

Support teachers in implementing literacy routines and strategies across content areas. Collect instructional data to highlight your system's current reality using a learning walk routine. Develop a strategic plan to scale the learning across your system. Support teacher leaders, coaches, and building / district administrators in leading disciplinary literacy work across your system.

Structure/Schedule

  • Year 1 Sessions:
    • Two (2) half-day learning sessions for district and building leaders
    • Two (2) full-day whole-team learning sessions
    • Three (3) personalized, in-district coaching sessions

    • One (1) half-day learning session for district and building leaders
    • Three (3) full-day whole-team learning sessions
    • Three (3) personalized, in-district coaching sessions

  • Find literacy standards in the practice standards of each content area
  • Unpack what reading skills are necessary and characteristic of successful readers in your discipline
  • Use authentic texts in content areas and scaffold to help all students access texts without sacrificing rigor
  • Know reading look-fors and some close reading routines to support all students in accessing, comprehending, and storing information from content area texts
  • Unpack what writing skills are necessary and characteristic of successful writers in your discipline
  • Explore authentic writing tasks — what does that mean? What does it look like in a 6-12 classroom?
  • Take away quick strategies to get students to use writing to process their thinking
  • Know writing look-fors and some writing routines to support all students in engaging in authentic literacy tasks appropriate for the discipline
  • Explore speaking and listening look-fors and high-leverage routines and discussion protocols that can be immediately applied in the classroom
  • Build a strategy bank that contains high-leverage routines and processes to support reading, writing, speaking, and listening in your discipline / content area and be able to immediately apply them
